International Seminar

In the last few decades there has been an exponential growth in the field of herbal medicine. It is getting popularized in developed and developing countries owing to its natural origin and lesser side effects. In olden times, vaidyas used to treat patients on individual basis, and prepare drug according to the requirement of the patient. But the scene has changed now; herbal medicines are being manufactured on a large scale in mechanical units, where manufacturers come across many problems such as availability of good quality raw material, authentication of raw material, availability of standards, proper standardization methodology of single drugs and formulations, quality control parameters etc.,

The increasing use of traditional medicines, the general lack of research, the growing concern by stakeholders vis-à-vis the demands for patenting rights, evidence of safety, efficacy, good quality traditional medicines and a range of other ethical issues coupled with the need for integration and maximization of their potential as a source of healthcare are some of the pressing challenges that must be tackled for acceptable use of traditional and alternative medicines in modern therapeutics.

The aim of this seminar was to provide a platform for students, eminent academicians, researchers, traditional medical practitioners, manufacturers & exporters of herbal products, marketing consultants and farmers with an interesting mix of highly focused & streamed scientific sessions, debates and poster presentations. Several experts both from abroad and within India delivered quality lectures. This seminar was a good forum to reflect on progress made and discuss further on the need for improvement and harmonization.

More than 1000 participants came from different parts of India and abroad represented a broad range of institutions, in the public as well as the private sector, brought to the seminar a valuable mix of experiences and perspectives.

The two days International seminar supported by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi and JSS University, Mysore was inaugurated on 4th December 2009. Dr.S.P.Dhanabal, Professor and Head, Dept. of Phytopharmacy & Phytomedicine and Convener of this International seminar welcomed the gathering. The International seminar was inaugurated by Sri.V.K.Subburaj IAS, Principal Secretary, Health & family welfare dept., Govt. of Tamilnadu.  In his inaugural speech he introduced the theme of the seminar and said that the country which accounted for eight percent of the global biodiversity was very wealthy in terms of herbal plants. He also added that, the number of persons practicing traditional medicine was about 1.5 million and the availability of many plants with medicinal value made the conditions in the country ideal for research. The demand for alternative medicines was growing all over the world because good quality allopathic drugs were costly. In countries like Africa, Australia, China, Japan, Vietnam, Germany and USA, a sizable section of the population was switching over to alternative and traditional medicines. Underscoring the need to search for herbs which could meet the requirement, he said that it should be ensured that they did not have any adverse or side effects and with proper research their use should be fine tuned. Also said that, he would recommend to the government to set up a permanent herbal research centre in the Nilgiris district.

A seminar chronicle consisting of all the abstracts and biography of International/national speakers and abstracts of delegates who presented scientific poster presentations was released.

Dr.Hilderbert Wagner, University of Munich, Germany delivered key note address on the theme " Synergy Research : Approaching a new generation of Phytopharmaceuticals" and referred to the future of Phytopharmaceuticals.

Dr.Mruthyunjaya P.Kulenur, Registrar, JSS University, Mysore, Dr.Chandrakant Kokate, Vice Chancellor - KLE's University, Belgaum,  Dr.Thavamani D.Palaniswamy, Managing Trustee, Kovai Medical Centre Research and Education Trust, Coimbatore, Mr.Shyam Sundar, Managing Director - Karnivals Medica Pvt., Ltd., Chennai and Mr.J.Yuvaraj, Vice President - Sales, Delvin formulations Pvt. Ltd., were the Guests of honor and graced the function.

Dr.B.Suresh, Vice Chancellor, JSS University, Mysore, presided over the function. By referring to the efforts made over the years by the JSSCP, Ooty to promote medicinal plants, he said that steps should be taken to create a portal for medicinal plants at least at the ntional level and JSS University would explore the possibility of bringing into being a National Institute of Natural Products.

The speakers came also from different backgrounds and presented the audience with different

practical experiences, insights, and views, both at  organizational and International level. It gave a good impression and understanding of the many advanced research that can and should be taken into account for harmonization of herbal medicines.

The seminar was organized in 15 substantive sessions, besides opening and closing sessions. The opening session was addressed by the Chief Guest Sri.V.K.Subburaj, Health Secretary, Govt. of Tamilnadu. This was followed by substantive sessions. Speakers comprised of academicians, scientists from industry and academia, research scholars, post graduate and undergraduate students.
