Department of Pharmacy Practice

The Department of Pharmacy Practice, a department within the JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty provides education to undergraduate (B.Pharm) and postgraduate (M.Pharm) students on the rational use of drugs, enables and advocates advanced clinical pharmacy practice, and creates and disseminates new knowledge about the effective, safe, and economical use of medications in people. Faculty members in the department, the most comprehensive unit of its type in India continue a tradition of exemplary services through the following activities.

  • Educate and train pharmacy students and practicing pharmacists who are internationally recognized for their high levels of knowledge and competence in practice, research, and/or teaching roles.

  • Provide innovative clinical pharmacy services to the diverse patient populations of the government headquarters hospital, Ooty and other neighboring hospitals.

  • Create through research and disseminate in the biomedical literature new scientific knowledge that improves the rational use of drugs in patients and in society.

  • Advocate professional roles for pharmacists on national and international levels.

  • Serve the public through presentation to professional audiences and service to professional societies, both in India and internationally

  • Create entrepreneurial opportunities that advance pharmacy practice and further the professional and financial interests of the department, and the college.

  • Comparison of long acting beta 2 agonists in the asthmatic patients, FIP Fellowship.

  • Population pharmacokinetics of selected drugs of narrow therapeutic index, AICTE, New Delhi.

Clinical Research

India has become a preferred destination for clinical research for both global and Indian multinational pharmaceutical companies. Currently the participation of our country in global clinical research is insignificant. However due to the growing interest there has been a phenomenal growth of clinical research here in the past few years. The pharmacy practionars of our country have found this field to be a potential for lucrative jobs.

Pharm D

The department of Pharmacy Practice is also imparting the Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy) six years course and Pharm D (Post Baccalaureate) three years course from the academic year 2008-2009. The Pharm D curriculum is a six years course consists of five academic years with subjects in basic biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical sciences, pharmacy practice and one year of internship.

The Pharm D (post baccalaureate) is a three years course with two academic years and one year internship. They join directly in fourth year of Pharm D course after completing B Pharm.

The course work is integrated with patient-centered practice experiences and one year of internship, with its focus centered on educating entry-level practitioners capable of providing good pharmaceutical care to the patients.

The curriculum contains subjects in the following areas:
Biomedical Sciences consisting of Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Pharmacology;
Pharmaceutical and Clinical Sciences consisting of Physical Pharmacy, Pharmacy Calculations, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, Pharmacogenomics, and Pharmacotherapy;

Pharmaceutical Care consisting of Pharmacoeconomics/Pharmacoepidemiology, Pharmacy Informatics, Drug Literature Evaluation, Biostatistics, Disease Management, Ethics, Pharmacy Law, Professional Practice, Physical Assessment, and Communication.
An internship of one year consisting of 6 months training in general medical ward and 2 month rotations organized into any three areas of concentration in a specialty ward to enhance their educational program.
